What is a Doula?

A doula is a non-medical person who helps assist a woman during her pregnancy, as a birth companion - coach. A doula may also provide support to the woman and her family after the baby is born.

Birth Doula Duties

As a birth doula, It is my duty to accompany women in labor to help ensure a safe, but satisfying birth experience. I will use my knowledge to provide physical, emotional, and informational support to women and their partner(s). I am independent and self-employed. As your doula, I am working for you. Your birthing journey is your choice. I will always respect you and your decisions.

As your doula, I will not:

  • Perform medical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, etc. I am here to provide physical and emotional support.

  • Make decisions for you. I will help you get the information necessary to make your own choice.

  • Speak with medical staff on your behalf. I will discuss options with you and make suggestions. I will empower you to advocate for yourself and to help organize your thoughts and questions, but you and/or your partner will speak directly with the medical staff.

Birth is an experience that demonstrates that life is not merely function and utility, but form and beauty.
— Christopher Largen

My Story

At a young age, I told myself that I did not want to birth children. I didn't want to experience that type of pain. During that time I was not educated about birth and didn't realize how beautiful it really is. My freshmen year of high school I was diagnoised with Non Classical Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasa (CAH). It's a hormonal disorder, where I produce too much testosterone and not enough estrogen. So I have to take medication for the rest of my life to help balance out my hormones. I was told that it may be difficult for me to have children and that I would have to go through hormonal therapy if I ever wanted to try having kids. At that time I was not worried about having kids, I was too young to even think about things like that. When I got married, at the age of 20, the discussion of birth came up. Me and my husband, who is trans, started talking about possible ways we can have kids. We first discussed the idea of freezing his eggs and then putting them inside of me, when we were both ready. Then I rebought up the fact that I will have to go through hormonal therapy. So we were trying to find more information on what we could do. We came across a Youtube page with a couple who is surprisingly similar to us. The couple was trying to have a baby. The man is trans and his wife has a difficult time getting pregnant. So we followed their story and continued watching their videos for weeks. Then I started watching birth video and started feeling fascinated with the idea of being pregnant and the process it takes. I fell in love with pregnant women and started to have a need to care for them. I eventually came across a video of Erykah Badu and she was talking about how she is a doula. I felt really connected to the idea of being there for a women through their experience of pregnancy. I started doing more research on what a doula really is and I knew that I could take on the role as one. So I began doing more research on how to begin my process of becoming a doula and here I am. My love for women grew even more when I educated myself more on pregnancy and the birth experience as a whole. If I am not able to birth any kids of my own I can help others.

Attending births is like growing roses. You have to marvel at the ones that just open up and bloom at the first kiss of the sun but you wouldn’t dream of pulling open the petals of the tightly closed buds and forcing them to blossom to your time line.
